Overview
When DevHub acquired the Brickwork platform, it was a smart move for customers: Brickwork gave Brickwork's existing customer base a smooth path off their legacy platform, plus some interim functionality DevHub didn't yet offer, while they transitioned onto DevHub's core product. But Brickwork's technology stack was different enough from DevHub's own that pulling it in-house would have meant DevHub's engineering team taking on a second, unfamiliar stack, a distraction from their core roadmap. DevHub brought in OpsAssist to run the Brickwork platform on their behalf: keeping it stable, keeping it low-maintenance, and building the bridge that let Brickwork customers move to DevHub on their own timeline.
Challenges
- An Unfamiliar Stack: Brickwork was built on technology meaningfully different from DevHub's own platform, making in-house maintenance an inefficient use of DevHub's engineering time.
- Minimal Distraction for the Core Team: The platform needed to be reliably maintained without pulling DevHub engineers off their primary product roadmap.
- Two Platforms, One Customer Experience: Brickwork customers needed a transition experience that felt coherent, not like being shuffled between two disconnected systems.
- A Moving Target: As a transitional platform, Brickwork needed to keep functioning smoothly for as long as customers relied on it, without becoming a long-term commitment for DevHub.
Solutions Implemented
- Infrastructure Ownership
Took over management of the Brickwork platform's infrastructure, handling hosting, operations, and maintenance so it continued running reliably without requiring ongoing attention from DevHub's engineering team.
- Low-Touch, High-Reliability Maintenance
Kept the platform stable and supported with minimal overhead, freeing DevHub's engineers to stay focused on their core product rather than context-switching into an unfamiliar stack.
- Cross-Platform Integration
Designed and built the integration layer connecting Brickwork and DevHub, giving Brickwork customers a smooth, connected experience as they transitioned to DevHub's platform.
Conclusion
By taking ownership of the Brickwork platform's infrastructure and maintenance, OpsAssist let DevHub's engineering team stay focused on what they do best, while still giving Brickwork customers a well-supported, well-integrated bridge to their new home on DevHub. The acquisition delivered on its promise, a smooth transition and added value for customers, without becoming a drag on DevHub's core engineering priorities.
